J and Garrett had a hair appointment scheduled at 4:30 on Tuesday afternoon. While they were there I asked if the hairdresser could work me in for an impromptu hair cut since it’s been approximately six months from the last one.
While Kim the hairstylist was cutting it we talked about how dry and frizzy my hair is since having Garrett. These days I’ve been feeling alot like Rowlf from The Muppet Show. She suggested an intensive conditioning treatment and some good shampoo and conditioner, etc, etc, blah, blah. Also she said I should not wait six months between hair appointments. Imagine that.
I decided to get it colored while I had some spare time, since my white hairs are glowing these days. As soon as she applied the color, my head started burning. All around my hairline felt like it was flaming and tingling. I let her know it was burning, so she stopped and applied some kind of cream that people use when they are getting a perm.
She kept going with the hair color and everything seemed ok. The rest of my head got that chilly feeling that it normally gets when I’m getting it dyed. But then I felt of my forehead and it was numb! All around my hairline was just numb as it could be. And I was like
So I told her again what was happening, and she said, “OK, that’s it, we’re washing it out.” And she was only halfway finished! So of course I’m kinda freaking out because half of my hair has been dyed and the other half hasn’t.
I was also bummed because it is such a rare event for me to have time to get my hair done, but I also didn’t want to be as bald as Telle Savalas. And two-toned is better than bald any day of the week. Some people in this word can pull off bald. Me? Not so much.
She rinsed and washed, rinsed and washed and progressively my head started feeling better. Kim was so worried about me though, she kept putting her hands on my cheeks and neck and saying I felt flushed. I agreed I was hot and seemed to be having some splotchiness. So she goes to the back of the salon and comes out with a shot glass of Benadryl!
Then she asked if I still wanted that conditioning treatment, and I said yes. So I tipped back the shot of Benadryl while she deep conditioned my hair. Then she stuck a plastic bag on my head and I drove home with instructions to rinse it out after 10 minutes and call her if I have a reaction to the dye.
What a lovely way to come home from the hairdresser.
UPDATE: Two days later and my hair is doing fine. No worries about going bald.
But I need to know – if you are a poofy haired peep like me, what do you use to tame the frizz? I’d love to hear your styling tips.

Whoa! Your head went numb? That would freak me out, too.

I have an afro naturally so….here’s what I do. First of all, use a good quality shampoo, then invest in a Chi flat iron. They are the best – hands down. The bes product for keeping my hair from frizzing has been the Matrix Sleek Look Smoothing system, the shampoo, conditioner, iron smoother and sealing serum. The iron smoother is for spritzing on each bit of hair you run through the flattening iron. Then run the sealing serum over your hair to give it a shiny and healthy look. And…trust me….my whole family lives in Alabama so I know how humid it can get. Not good for us poofy head people!

My hair was really poofy down in FL, and the only thing I ever tried was Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. B uses it and I liked that it had the word “skinny” in the name. I have no other products to share or compare.
I hate that you had a reaction to the hair dye. I have always had really good success with Aveda hair color.
