Other than that time I fell in the lake and came up covered in snot weed, I have never really been up close and personal with a swamp.
Sure I’ve flown over some huge swamps on the way to Orlando and New Orleans, and I’ve driven past other swamps plenty of times. But to stand smack dab in the middle of one and soak up all the au natural naturey stuff? That’s another story.
The other day I decided to take a detour for a photo op of a swamp.
There is a place in Shelby County that is worth a little look-see if you are a water lover like me. Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve is owned by the University of Montevallo.
There are 60 acres of wooded wetlands filled with all sorts of critters. Things that crawl and things that fly and things that creep around on the ground. And let’s hope the ghost of Lucius Clay doesn’t get up and walk around.
By now y’all know that I love to fish. I love being around woods and water and nature as long as I don’t have to exert too much effort to get to it.
That’s why the Ebenezer Swamp Nature Preserve is right up my alley.
With a 675 foot long boardwalk meandering through the swamp, lazy nature lovers like me can commune with the wildlife without even breaking a sweat. Or an ankle.
Maybe one day I’ll get around to walking on that boardwalk. For now you’ll just have to settle for what I could see from the main road.
Sorry to be such a tease. Hey, cut me some slack. I had a sleeping toddler in the car when I snapped these shots!
PS to my photographer friends: If you could find a girl brave enough to go there, talk about the perfect place to trash a dress.
Gorgeous pictures. My boys like to go to the boardwalk and fish (FL)

awesome pics
Great pics and very impressive that these were taken from the car occupied by sleeping toddler! I had no idea that place was even out there!
Wow – that is amazing! Who knew Shelby County had swamp land? That looks like a fun place to explore…with a good bug repellent.
