There is a strange phenomenon happening around here folks. For about a year now I have been noticing tiny and then not-so-tiny holes showing up in our cotton shirts. At first I thought it was just normal wear and tear. Then I wondered if I might have an invisible moth problem.
Then Garrett wore this shirt a few weeks back:
And it came out of the washing machine the next day looking like this:
And that’s when I began to wonder if I had razor blades in my washing machine. That shirt was completely shredded. Now I know it was pretty worn out already. Thomas doesn’t normally have red devil eyeballs. However, he shouldn’t look like he had a run in with Freddy Krueger and a hungry lion all at once.
Not long after that shirt I found a few more spots on my own shirts.
But then this happened:
Garrett had worn this Old Navy shirt just ONCE and it had been washed just ONCE. How does a hole as big as my index finger show up in a shirt worn once?
The stankhole is front and center, too, so this new back to school shirt is a goner.
I guess we can scratch normal wear and tear off the list.
Ok, so maybe there is something inside my washer causing the rips? Possibly something sharp that the clothes are snagging on as they spin past? This theory is talked about a lot over here on this website– seems I’m not the only person with this problem.
But, a snag in my washing machine wouldn’t explain this shirt– one of J’s long sleeve Polo button down work shirts. This shirt has never seen the inside of my washing machine. It goes out to the cleaners to be washed and pressed because I’m that dang lazy.
So what then, pray tell, is happening here?
Do I need a new washing machine? Do I need to call an exterminator? Buy some moth balls? Cedar balls? Amazing Dryer Balls? Do I need to check my laundry room at night and see if it turns into a boiler room?
Seriously people.
This is getting old.
Not to mention expensive.
Wow. I don’t know. I have not seen that before. And I do a lot of laundry. Keep us updated.
Surely it has to be an issue with your washer … are they an older set? We had a REALLY old washer that was a hand-me-down when we first bought our house that put holes in clothes and haven’t had the issue since buying a new w/d. Good luck – and keep us posted!
This has happened to me.
After a call from the applicance guy (and I really wish I could remember all the details) it was something about the clothes were getting stuck in the drum during the spin cycle. After upgrading later (washer finally went kaput) we got a front loader and no more tiny holes.
Found your blog through One Porkchop. 🙂
It is an older model washer and dryer- maybe 2002ish? Not like 1985 or anything! LOL
I guess I’ll start pricing out a nice new set of Whirlpools!
I have the same problem!!! But my front loader is new within the last 2 years!! I was thinking we had bugs? but I tend to find if I over load the machine they may be getting stuck in the drum?? I am not sure but several of my favorite things I am afraid to wash!
found you through lettered cottage! 🙂
