Ready to take your spice cabinet to the next level? Have you seen the beautiful wall-mounted hexagon spice jars with magnetic lids from Gneiss Spice?
My jaw dropped the first time because 1. magnetic lids, and 2. I LOVED the honeycomb design pattern they created with all the varying shades of spices. There is something about that hexagonal shape that calls my name, and seeing magnetic spice jars all clustered together makes me HAPPY. Maybe it’s the fact they look like empty honey jars to form that beehive shape?
I added this little niche with open shelving next to my pantry during our kitchen remodeling project, so it seemed like the perfect spot for my new hexagon jars to hang. And I was right! Look how great this is! These spice magnets make me so happy! It may seem like my kitchen organization is a little cluttered, but I know exactly where everything lives. The fact that I can keep my dry herbs and spices right out in the open is just an extra gift.
I bought my hexagon spice jars with magnetic lids from Gneiss Spice. Their jars and gold lids have held up really well, though I see there are other versions of them on Amazon that also have good reviews. Since my stainless steel fridge is not magnetic, I wanted a wallmounted spice rack. Their magnetic wall mounting plates for spices were not my favorite. I wanted something that matched my space, and right now, shiny copper is my jam.
Since copper is NOT magnetic, I had to get dig through my crafts supplies and make my own metal surface for my spice rack. I purchased an 8×16 stainless steel push plate and glued a sheet of copper onto it. I had some leftover copper tape from a previous stained glass project, so I used that to wrap the edges and make them nice and smooth.
This beautiful honeycomb spice rack is one of my most favorite items in my kitchen now! Not only is it beautiful, but convenient for cooking. My daughter loves to make “potions” with my spices, so I buy some cheap ones for her to play with and use the rest for my own. It’s such a fun addition to my kitchen nook!
DIY Magnetic Copper Spice Rack
- 2 pieces 12″ square copper sheathing
- Metal 11.8″ x 17.7″ magnetic bulletin board with screws included
- Gorilla Glue
- 24 Hexagon Spice Jars with magnetic lids (mine are from Gneiss Spice)
- Copper Tape (optional)
Instructions:
Lay the 2 pieces of 12×12 copper side-by-side on a flat, solid surface. Cover with kraft paper to protect it from glue. Make sure the film-coated side of the copper is facing down.
Apply gorilla glue to the back of the copper sheathing and the metal plate.
Center the plate so there is excess all the way around. You don’t have much wiggle room on the 11.8″ side, so place it carefully.
Use a plastic credit card or scraper tool to gently bend and wrap the edge of the copper around the metal plate. Pretend you’re wrapping a gift.
You can use copper tape around the outside edge for an extra detail or to cover any exposed edges, but it’s not necessary.
Press with heavy books and allow to dry for a few hours.
Attach to the wall with 4 screws (the copper is easy to drill through).
Attach your glass spice storage jars and enjoy!
Such a beautiful look!
How many magnetic spice jars do I need?
This is going to be a personal question depending on how often you cook and how exotic your tastebuds are. How many ingredients do you use in your kitchen? I personally purchased two 12 packs of empty small spice jar kits with seasoning name labels, plus the organic seasonings for cookies and cakes 7-pack, which gives me 31 total jars on the wall. This is adequate for my needs, but you may need more!
Is it better to store spices in glass or plastic jars?
Without a doubt, I prefer to keep my spices in glass jars- especially ones with a tight seal and airtight lid. Spices last longer and stay fresher when they are not exposed to air. These are the perfect storage solution for me!
What size jar is best for spices?
These are the small spice jars- a 2 oz hexagonal glass jar. From the Gneiss website: Small hexagonal glass jars measure 2” tall x 1.75” wide and hold a shy 1/4 cup volume and are smaller than a traditional spice bottle. Purchase Gneiss Spice large jars if planning to refill with traditional grocery store bottles, since they hold 1/2 cup (4 oz). It depends on how much spice storage you need.
How do you store spices so you can see them?
Glass jars make it easy to see what’s inside! Since it can be hard to tell the difference between some spices, that’s where the labels come in! The sets come with a sheet of popular spice labels so you will know exactly what you’re about to add to your pot.
Are the magnets strong?
Yes! The high-strength magnets are the main reason I chose Gneiss Spice branded jars since they have strong magnets. I read lots of reviews on the no-name ones (or DIY ones) that had issues with the magnets not sticking. If you’re on the hunt for some magnetic glass spice containers, these are definitely worth the price.
What if I’m not a DIYer? Can I just buy it somewhere?
I have searched and not found any magnetic copper sheets that look exactly like this. If anyone finds one, please share in the comments! MagGrip has different colors (black/white/pink/ wood grain). The wood grain magnetic plate has a similar vibe as the copper if you don’t want to DIY it!
I just love the beautiful copper sheet of this spice rack. The hexagon bottle are so cute! They look like a little beehive. I have to get my husband to make me this diy spice storage.
Yes! The shape is what I loved the most!
