There is something about a Fourth of July table that just makes me happy down to my bones.
Maybe it is the red, white, and blue. Maybe it is the excuse to pull out the good dishes. Maybe it is the fact that summer is in full swing and the whole country is in a cookout mood. Whatever the reason, I look forward to decorating my dining room table for Independence Day every single year.

From Home Office Disaster to Dining Room I Actually Love
When we first moved into this house, I thought it was a brilliant idea to set up my home office in the dining room. Reader, it was not. That room was the first thing you saw when you walked through the front door, and it was a constant avalanche of paperwork, dirty dishes, and general chaos. It never, ever looked presentable.
So I finally moved my office up to the attic and took back the dining room for its actual intended purpose: sitting down and eating like civilized people.

I’m SO excited to show you the finished room today along with a patriotic 4th of July table decked out in red, white and blue. Come take the tour!

The first real piece of furniture I bought for this room was a six-seat dining table. This was a first for me. I had never owned a dining table that could seat six people before, and I was ridiculously excited about it. I found mine at a going-out-of-business sale at a local Pier One, which is sadly no longer around. But there are so many beautiful farmhouse dining tables available now, and I will link some favorites below.
I bought the ‘Bradding’ dining table with a matching bench and two side chairs from a going out of business sale at a local Pier One Imports.

I also grabbed the matching sideboard, and my husband attached an old fireplace mantel I had been hoarding in the garage for a year to the wall above it. Sometimes the best decorating decisions are the ones that require patience.

I found this old fireplace mantel at a local junk store and my husband attached it to the wall above the sideboard. It’s been sitting out in my garage gathering dust for over a year, but finally it found a home. It is perfect for this spot.

It was so easy to create and it turned out so great.

I found this green painted map of the US at Farmhouse + Family for my corner display.

Thought this was perfect to celebrate America’s birthday.

I have an addiction for junky old stuff. But y’all already knew that.

I thought it would go away after a while, but so far it’s still hanging in there.

A Patriotic Tablescape Decorating Idea
So, back to the reason for this post. Now for the fun part.
I wanted a 4th of July table that felt festive without being precious. Nothing too fussy. Nothing that required me to hunt down special pieces I would only use once a year. I wanted red, white, and blue using things I already owned or could pick up easily. I used red striped dishtowels as placemats and a vintage flag table runner down the middle of the table. Simple white plates on gold chargers and boom. Table is set.

I stuck the dinnerware in a glass vase with a galvanized flower frog to hold them up.

And added a red vintage toolbox to hold all the napkins. That pinstriped star sachet came from Dirt Home and Garden in Franklin, TN.
And there you go.. it’s a simple and easy Fourth of July tablescape!

The best patriotic dessert is also the simplest. A bowl of fresh strawberries, a bowl of blueberries, and a can of whipped cream. Red, white, and blue. Done. Your guests will be happy.
I finished out this room makeover with a brand new light fixture! Here was the old one that we replaced….

I also replaced the original chandelier in this room, which was a relic from the early 1990s and looked every single day of its age. The new one is a six-light black chandelier that I found on Amazon as a much more affordable alternative to the Pottery Barn style I had been eyeing. It completely transformed the room and I am still obsessed with it.
I’m soooo happy with this pretty light fixture.

Here is one of my favorite budget decorating moves: red striped dish towels as placemats. They cost a few dollars, they wash beautifully, and they read as intentional rather than improvised. Nobody ever guesses they came from a kitchen aisle.
I hope you guys have a great Independence Day!

There is just so much to love about this! Lots of visual interest! And the flag and the US sign are perfection. Good work!
Thanks Randi! 🙂
Your whole dining room looks awesome, Beth! I love all the subtle patriotic touches, like the chalkboard America map!
Thanks so much Lisa!
So pretty Beth! I’m loving all the decor in this room. Such a pretty space, and love your patriotic touches.
Thanks Deb! I’m so glad you put this blog hop together! I needed to share my new Dining Room so this was perfect. 🙂
Did you use Sherwin Williams Rainwashed in your dining room?
Beth, I love your new dining room! It’s just beautiful. And I can’t wait to see your tutorial on how you made that flag with a crib mattress springs!
Thanks Laura! That flag was SOOOO easy! I’m sharing the DIY tomorrow!
So many cute ideas!! Love everything, but just a gentle reminder(one of the little photos shows what appears to be an actual vintage flag)It is not ok to use a real flag as “decor” in this way. or draped on any furniture for that matter! Love Old Glory and all she represents! xxoo
Beth, your table is gorgeous! Well, your whole dining room is gorgeous but I love how you used the wooden tool box in the center. Your new chandelier is perfection! So thrilled I could be apart of such a talented group of ladies!
Fantastic!! Love the room, and as always, your unique touches. Can’t wait to see it decorated for other holidays, too!!
I love that you used those dishtowels as placemats! And that flag wall hanging is amazing. I think I need one. I love your whole table, it looks amazing!
Hi there! Found this post while researching the Pier One Bradding extension table. We looked at Pottery Barn Banks Table and a few other places but really liked the look and price of the Pier One table! Would you buy it again? How is it holding up? PS..looks beautiful!! Great style!
I know this is an old post, but I’m hoping you’ll still get this question. Can you tell me the length of your table and bench? I know they have a 60-something inch table and a longer table in the Bradding Collection (I want to say 80-ish inches?)…. and was wondering which size table you have here? I love the bench-table combo! It’s hard for me to decide on the length. I’d like to be able to push the bench under our table. Are you able to do that with yours?
Mine is : 78″W x 40″ x 30″H and the bench fits perfectly underneath! 🙂
I’ve been looking at this table for a while. However, some of the reviews have pictures of water stains and scratches after using it for a short period of time. Have you experienced this problem?
Thanks!
How is this table holding up? Does it scratch easily? Thanks 🙂
